ABOUT THE EDUCATIONAL SAILING ADVENTURE:
Unlike many other water sports and activities, sailing is a great example of an activity where passion for the water, wind, team work, learning and sustainability are combined together in one. Your child will learn the following important aspects on our sailing adventure:
• Get a glimpse and feel of what it is like to live off the grid, in a sustainable way, surrounded by the sea world
• Communication is key to fun and safe sailing – same can be practiced in everyday life
• Learn how wind and waves come together to propel a sailboat – great practical science lessons for kids
• Find out why everything on the boat has its name – we can all learn how to communicate more clearly
• Fun and thrill of steering a wind-powered sailboat – great lesson on power of nature
• Work as a team to deploy and trim sails and steer the boat – better team work yields better results for everyone
WHAT TO EXPECT AND BRING: Children should come dressed to spend a day outdoors and wear non-slip shoes, hat, sun protective clothing and sunscreen (if they use one). Natural chemical-free coconut oil-based sunscreen will also be provided. Participants should expect to get wet, comfortable with moving around the boat and getting wet.
Hydration is extremely important, be sure to pack plenty of water.
Light healthy snack in a sustainable container, as children tend to get hungry when out on the water. A pack of saltines may be a good idea for an occasional motion sickness. Something to take notes with if the children wish. Cameras/phones/other gadgets should be in water-resistant cases and securely fastened or packed away in the bag to avoid damage or loss.
WHERE AND WHEN: We will meet at 10am sharp at Keyport Yacht Club where the boat is docked. The address is 115 First Street, Keyport, NJ 07735. We will meet you at the Club parking lot. The pick up with be at the same spot at 1pm. Please allow for up to 30 minute delay at pick up, as we will be dependent on the launch service schedule.
ABOUT THE CAPTAIN: Captain Alex has over 20 years of boating experience with power and sailing boats ranging from 19 to 56 feet in length. In addition to owning and sailing a vast range of boats, for many years Alex ran a boat charter company where he not only sailed and maintained the boats, but also educated and trained all participants on safety, sustainability and navigation in busy New York Harbor.
ABOUT THE BOAT: The sailing takes place aboard Winnebel, a 37-foot Irwin Sailboat. Winnebel is maintained and sailed by the three generations of the Shekoff family. During your sailing experience it will be sailed by Alex and his 11-year old son Max. Kids love to hear feedback and comments from their peers and are not intimidated by the challenge of sailing. The family donates their time, sailboat and experience to promote alternative hands-on learning experience.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Each parent or legal guardian must sign the consent form at enrollment
ADULT VOLUNTEERS: We are looking for one adult volunteer to help with the administration of the event. If you are interested, please email us at with your contact information.
